SEO for Birmingham businesses

Technical SEO, migrations and custom PHP work for Birmingham firms, from a freelancer who will tell you when an agency is the better fit.

I am not based in Birmingham. I work from Nuneaton, roughly forty minutes out, and I run Birmingham clients remotely, travelling in when a job genuinely needs a room and a whiteboard. There is no city centre office, no account team, no fifteen year link profile. What there is: one developer who writes the code, runs the audit and answers the phone.

The honest version of Birmingham search

Birmingham is the second largest city in the UK and page one reflects that. Search a broad commercial phrase, anything of the shape solicitors Birmingham or Birmingham web design, and the results belong to firms that have been earning and rebuilding links since before most of us had a Search Console login. Some of them put more people on one account than I have in the whole business.

So here is the part other pages skip. If you want those head terms, from a standing start, on a modest budget, I will not get you there. Authority at that level is bought with years or with money, usually both. Saying so costs me enquiries. I would rather lose those than take a retainer for work I know disappoints in month seven.

Where a one-person operation actually wins

Head terms are the loudest part of the market, not the whole of it, and frequently not where the money is.

Narrow service intent, where the field thins out

Broad terms attract browsers. Specific ones attract buyers. A phrase naming the exact service, problem and area has a fraction of the volume and a fraction of the serious competition, because agencies optimise the client's vanity term and leave the fifty phrases underneath it alone. Those fifty are winnable inside a quarter, and the people typing them already have a wallet out.

Technical work on platforms nobody wants to touch

Plenty of agency teams are excellent inside WordPress and lost outside it. I build in PHP, MySQL and a custom MVC framework, and I administer the LAMP stack, hosting, DNS, SMTP and cPanel or Plesk underneath it. Systems I have shipped include a booking and quote CMS for Express Removals, an internal logistics CMS with dispatch, job tracking and custom invoicing, a support portal with ticket routing and response-time reporting, an ecommerce platform handling inventory, stock alerts and suppliers, and my own PHP CMS, which has SEO scoring and auditing built in. If your site is legacy, custom or awkward, that is my strongest ground.

Migrations, run by the person doing the redirects

Replatforming is where organic traffic gets quietly destroyed, and the split between the strategist writing the plan and the developer implementing it does most of the damage. I am both, so the redirect map, canonical logic and crawl checks sit with one person who cannot blame the other one.

The practitioner on the call, not an account manager

You talk to whoever opens the codebase. No relay, no ticket queue, no summary of a summary. Worth a lot when something breaks at four on a Friday.

AI search, where old advantages count for less

This is the level ground. When ChatGPT, Gemini or an AI Overview picks businesses to name, a decade of links matters far less than clear entity information, clean structured data, direct answers and consistent details across the web. Nobody has a fifteen year head start on a surface this new. That window is open to small businesses now and will not stay open.

Evidence, from a client south of the city

Mirage Bodyshop is a Coventry-area client, not a Birmingham one, and I am not dressing it up as something it is not. From close to zero, the site reached 612 clicks and 56,700 impressions in its first three months, and 1,670 clicks and 204,000 impressions in the three months to early October 2026, at an average position of 12. Asked which bodyshop it recommends in Coventry, Google's AI Mode lists it first. The screenshots are on the Coventry SEO page. That is a method with a measured result attached, which is a different claim from a Birmingham case study. I do not have one of those yet. More on the competitive side of it on the Coventry SEO page.

When you should hire an agency instead

This is the section I would want to read if I were you. Call an agency, not me, when:

  • You are running a large multi-channel campaign. Organic, paid, social, email and PR moving together to a launch date needs a team with a project manager. One person is a bottleneck, not a bargain.
  • Paid media is the main event. I do not run Google Ads or Meta at scale. If growth is fundamentally a media buying plan, you want people who live in those auctions daily.
  • You need a content team. Four posts a week, a video series, ghostwritten thought leadership: that is writers, editors and a calendar, not a developer with a keyword tool.
  • You need dedicated account management. Some brands need a named contact every working hour, formal reporting cycles and cover during absence. Holidays exist, and so does illness.
  • Procurement requires it. If sign-off demands twenty staff, indemnity at a set level and a framework agreement, I will not clear that bar and neither of us should pretend otherwise.

If two of those describe you, hire the agency. I would rather point you somewhere useful than take the meeting.

What remote actually means, week to week

Work happens on your systems. I take access to Search Console, Analytics and the hosting or CMS, then work directly in the codebase. Findings arrive as short written updates you can forward internally, not fifty-page PDFs with a stock photo on the cover. Calls happen when there is a decision to make, on video, usually under half an hour. Between them it is email or WhatsApp, same working day.

I come into Birmingham when the job warrants it: kick-off for a bigger build, a workshop with several stakeholders in one room, a site visit for a physical location, or the awkward migration meeting where five people have to agree a switchover date. Forty minutes each way is a normal part of the job, not a favour.

Questions people ask before they call

Are you based in Birmingham?

No. Nuneaton, in Warwickshire, about forty minutes away. I have no Birmingham office and I will not claim a virtual address as one. If a supplier inside the city boundary matters to you, that is a fair reason to hire someone else.

Why pick you over a Birmingham agency?

The person auditing your site is the person fixing it, and your budget goes into work rather than an account layer above it. If your problems are technical, structural or platform-related, that trade favours you heavily. If your problems are volume and reach, it does not.

Can you get me ranking for the big city-wide terms?

Probably not, and not quickly. Those results are held by sites with long-established link profiles. What I can do is take the service and problem phrases underneath them, where intent is sharper and the field thinner, then build from there. Some businesses grow into head terms after two or three years. Nobody arrives in month three.

Do you travel into Birmingham?

Yes, when it earns its place: kick-offs, workshops, migration planning, site visits. Routine reporting does not need a car journey and I will not bill you for one.

What kind of Birmingham business is a good fit?

Owner-run and small-team companies with real services and real customers, anyone on a bespoke or legacy platform, businesses facing a migration or rebuild, and firms watching AI assistants recommend competitors instead of them. Trades, professional services, manufacturers and B2B suppliers fit that shape often.

Do you only work on WordPress?

The opposite. Custom PHP and MySQL builds are home ground and I take on the legacy systems that get quoted out of existence elsewhere. The general approach is set out on the SEO services page, and there is a smaller-town version of the same work on the Nuneaton SEO page.

Send me the site and the phrases you want to win. I will tell you which are realistic, which are not, and whether an agency would serve you better. That assessment is free and it is not a sales call in disguise; I have already told you above where I lose. If it looks like a fit, send me a message below and we will get a call in the diary this week. Standard prices are on my work with me page, and every job gets a written quote first.
